What is Dietetics?

Dietetics is the science behind food.

Food is a crucial component to living; food gives the body nutrition to stay healthy and energy to function. Food keeps humanity going. But, food isn’t always viewed as a matter-of-fact part of sustaining life. Food often gets caught in the crosshairs of a much larger cultural battle between narrow understandings of health, vanity, and human worth, sometimes even becoming villainized and divided in the process.

In reality, food is neutral—not good, not bad, just food—and dietetics helps us better understand it.

What does a Dietitian do?

Seeing food from a simplified lens doesn’t mean neglecting it’s vast nutritional components and benefits. Every type of food is built differently so, like the final touches to a painting, utilizing these differences in specific and thoughtful ways can fulfill physical needs, meet nutritional goals, and keep the body healthy.

Dietitians are like the painters—developing, finding, and creating ways to add and use food for better solutions.

What would a Dietitian do for me here?

If you’re a client at HHH, you’re likely here to find support for your relationship with food, your body, or yourself—and we’re happy to have you! But whether the goal is to navigate an eating disorder, disordered eating, or a sense of self-worth and value, our therapists unpack everything on the inside: thoughts, patterns, values, beliefs, trauma, cycles; however, unlike the treatment for other disorders, eating disorders and disordered eating can have very real, very detrimental effects on a person’s physical health. To offer a wholistic view of treatment, we’ve brought in a dietitian.
