I spent years agonizing over my body—hiding pizza boxes in the garbage, tracking every bite like I was preparing for a nutrition exam, and wondering if I’d ever feel truly free. When I finally stepped off the diet roller coaster and began healing my relationship with food, everything changed. That transformation lit a fire in me: I knew I had to help others find the same peace.

Over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside hundreds of people as they’ve faced eating disorders, anxiety, depression, and trauma. Together, we’ve done the deep, brave work of putting themselves first and building lives they’re proud of. Therapy with me is honest, empowering, and rooted in the belief that you are worthy of care—exactly as you are (no “earning it” required).

These days, my work focuses mostly on teaching and supervising the talented therapists and interns at Health Hope Harmony. I occasionally meet with clients through co-therapy sessions alongside our interns, which I love because it allows me to both support clients and guide future therapists.

Note: I’m also licensed to practice in Virginia.

A Little About Me
When I’m not in the therapy room, you can usually find me with my nose (or ears) in a book (thrillers, fantasy, and development are my “not so guilty” pleasures), at Jazzercise getting my sweat on, or camping under the stars with my family. I also love baking and decorating cakes—especially the kind that look almost too pretty to eat (but we do anyway).. And yes, I will absolutely talk about dessert in session if you bring it up. My favorite place to be is anywhere near water—whether it’s a lake, a river, or just a glass of water within reach. I believe laughter belongs in the healing process, and I never underestimate the power of a perfectly timed dad joke.

Parenting a teen can be challenging—and being a teen can feel downright impossible some days. I specialize in helping families navigate complex emotions, clashing communication styles, and all the curveballs life throws your way. Whether you’re facing adoption-related transitions, disordered eating, body image concerns, anxiety, or depression, I offer a safe, no-nonsense space to explore healing and growth.

I’ve worked with teens and families for decades, and I’ve learned that real change doesn’t happen in a straight line. My approach is grounded in empathy, collaboration, and a willingness to cut through the noise so you can focus on what actually matters. I’m especially passionate about supporting adolescents who feel stuck, misunderstood, or disconnected—and helping parents understand their kids without needing a translator.

As a therapist who embraces the Health at Every Size (HAES) philosophy, I help clients reconnect with their intrinsic worth and build a more compassionate relationship with their bodies. When we learn to value ourselves, we open the door to deeper, more authentic connections with others.

A Little About Me
When I’m not in the therapy room, you’ll usually find me spending time with my family or enjoying live music—whether it’s a big-name tour or a small local band. I’m rarely without a Diet Coke nearby, believe in the restorative power of a good laugh, and think life’s too short for bad music or bad food. I appreciate honesty, a bit of sarcasm, and moments that cut through the noise to what really matters.

Hi, I’m Mara—a trauma-informed therapist committed to helping adults and couples move past the thoughts, feelings, and patterns that keep them stuck. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, disordered eating, or relationship challenges, I offer a safe, affirming space to explore healing and growth.

I believe therapy should feel like a conversation that matters—not a test you have to pass. My style is warm, collaborative, and tailored to your needs, blending compassion with honest feedback. Together, we’ll identify what’s getting in the way of the life you want, and work on practical, meaningful steps toward change. You can expect a space where you’re supported, respected, and maybe even able to laugh a little along the way.

A Little About Me
I’m a big fan of chocolate anything, Dots pretzels, and peanut butter cracker snacks—especially paired with sparkling water (berry or lime!) or iced coffee. My office is filled with stacks of books, and I love fiction that makes me reflect on deeper themes. Recent favorites include Remarkably Bright Creatures, Firefly Lane, Lessons in Chemistry, The Women, and the ACOTAR series. When I’m not reading, you’ll find me crocheting, sewing, or rewatching comfort shows like New Girl, Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill, and Friends. My favorite color is blue, and I adore dogs and sloths. I’d be honored to help you create the life and relationships you’ve been hoping for.

Hi! I’m Nichole. I specialize in helping adults navigate life’s most difficult moments with compassion, clarity, and resilience. Whether you’re facing the aftermath of trauma, struggling with mood challenges, or working to heal your relationship with food and your body, I provide a safe, supportive space for you to be heard and understood.

I believe you already hold the strength you need to heal—my role is to help you see it, trust it, and use it in new ways. Together, we’ll work to untangle old patterns, make sense of your story, and create a life that feels more grounded and fulfilling. Clients often describe me as warm, curious, and down-to-earth, and I believe that genuine connection is the foundation for meaningful change.

A Little About Me
Outside of the therapy room, I’m someone who finds joy in the little things—like pickles, peanut butter, and marshmallows (not necessarily together!). I love crime documentaries, trashy reality TV, and spending quality time with my nephew. I’d be honored to walk alongside you as you take steps toward healing and reclaiming your life.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck in patterns that no longer serve you? I help women and LGBTQ+ individuals build healthier relationships with their mood, body image, self-esteem, and the thoughts that get in the way of living fully. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, or simply seeking deeper self-understanding, I offer a space where you can feel safe, supported, and empowered.

In our work together, you can expect a mix of compassion, curiosity, and practical strategies to help you move toward the life you want. I believe you are the expert on your own experience, and my role is to help you untangle the knots, see things more clearly, and discover new ways forward. I create a space where your whole self is welcome—your pain, your joy, your questions, and your hopes—and where you don’t have to pretend to be “fine” when you’re not.

A Little About Me
When I’m not in session, you’ll find me crocheting cozy things, gaming, or sipping Dunkin’ coffee like it’s my job. I’m obsessed with pineapple snacks, sage green everything, and emotionally complex TV shows (Firefly and The Last of Us, anyone?). My favorite book is Pride and Prejudice (I’m a sucker for classics). I’d be honored to walk alongside you as you take the next steps toward the life you want.

Life has a way of throwing curveballs, sometimes exciting, sometimes overwhelming, and often both at the same time. I believe therapy works best when you feel safe, heard, and accepted just as you are. My role is to walk alongside you as you navigate change, tap into your strengths, and move toward what matters most to you.

I work with adults, teens, and couples, with a special focus on supporting people through life transitions, especially women navigating the highs and lows of motherhood. As a parent to a toddler myself, I understand how much care, patience, and grace this season of life can require. Whether you’re adjusting to a major change, healing your relationship with food or your body, or simply looking for more stability in your day-to-day life, I’m here to help.

A Little About Me
Outside the therapy room, you’ll often find me spending time with my family, painting, or chasing my toddler around with a cup of coffee in hand. I love pasta, anything chocolate, and the kind of reality TV that makes you laugh and shake your head at the same time. I gravitate toward suspense/thriller books, the color green, and cats. My love language is quality time, which shows up in how I connect with clients, too. And if you ever need a reality TV recommendation or a new pasta recipe, I’ve got you covered.

Brooke Bednarz (she/her)

Masters Student Intern

Abstract teal ink blot on white background

As a student therapist, I’ve learned that resilience often looks less like perfection and more like the courage to persevere in the face of setbacks. Healing is not linear—it’s a lifelong journey of ups and downs where “failing forward” can be one of the most authentic ways to foster growth and change.

I chose to become a mental health professional because nothing inspires me more than helping others flourish into the best versions of themselves. Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, I was surrounded by a diverse community, each person carrying unique challenges and life stories. Witnessing this sparked my curiosity and compassion at a young age, and it solidified my desire to support people through life’s difficulties. This passion continues to guide me in my work today, as I strive to help clients feel truly seen, valued, and supported.

My therapeutic style centers on creating a nonjudgmental environment where clients feel safe and understood. I primarily use a CBT-based approach, while also integrating Gestalt and Person-Centered techniques. I work through a Health at Every Size and trauma-informed lens, bringing authenticity, empathy, and unconditional support to every session.

I especially enjoy working with teenagers and young adults navigating life transitions, trauma, eating disorders, and substance use (whether experiencing these challenges directly or supporting a loved one who is). These years are full of change, identity formation, and pressure—and it is a privilege to create a space where young people can slow down, feel understood, and make sense of their experiences. Too often, this age group feels invalidated or overlooked, and I find deep meaning in helping them feel heard, supported, and empowered.

I am currently a graduate student intern in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at the University of Iowa. I previously graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a minor in Addiction and Recovery. I work with clients both in-person and virtually. My clinical interests include eating disorders, anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance use disorders, with a focus on teens, college students, and young adults.

Outside of therapy, I love music, pop culture, and animals (especially dogs!). I enjoy cooking, sewing, and spontaneous adventures. I also like to use humor in sessions and connect through clients’ passions. At my core, I am a bubbly, enthusiastic, yet empathetic and warm person who strives to meet clients exactly where they are.

Grace Johnson (she/her)

Masters Student Intern

Abstract teal ink blot on white background

I became a mental health professional because I want to help people find hope, joy, and fulfillment—even amidst life’s challenges. I believe life is hard, but it’s always possible to experience moments of meaning, growth, and happiness. As a therapist, I have the privilege of walking alongside clients as they navigate setbacks, celebrate wins, and create the changes they want to see in their lives.

My therapeutic style is warm, affirming, and client-centered. I focus on supporting the whole person—mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical—while creating a nonjudgmental space for honest reflection and growth. I primarily use Gestalt and Person-Centered approaches, and I work collaboratively to help clients create actionable steps toward change or simply process life’s challenges in a safe space.

I especially enjoy working with teens and young adults navigating life transitions, eating disorders, body image concerns, and trauma. These years are full of change, identity formation, and pressure, and I strive to provide a space where young people feel seen, understood, and supported. I celebrate every win with clients—big or small—and believe that showing up for therapy is itself a courageous step toward growth.

I am currently a Master’s Level Student Intern in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at the University of Iowa, with an expected graduation in May 2026. I also earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the University of Iowa and plan to remain local post-graduation. I work with clients both in-person and virtually. My clinical interests include eating disorders, body image, mood disorders, and trauma, with a focus on teens, college students, and young adults.

Outside of therapy, I enjoy reading with a good cup of coffee, cooking, and binge-watching TV shows with my husband. I love hosting friends, sharing laughs, and processing life together. I am also a dance teacher and choreographer for teens, and I enjoy staying active, growing in my faith, and updating my Goodreads. At my core, I am compassionate, fun-loving, and slightly sarcastic—always ready to sit down and unpack life together.

Practice Manager/ Intake Coordinator

Cedar Rapids Office

Abstract teal ink blot on white background

Not long ago, I believed only martyrs changed the world. I followed this belief into the field of crisis work and, from there, I sacrificed myself for years in an attempt to make a change. What I didn't realize at the time though is that, although the work was important, I was robbed of my sense of peace. And, worse yet, I was robbed of my hope.

The world is surely a broken place. Having to come to terms with my own trauma, insecurities, and mental health diagnoses, while still working inside the mental health field, was a confusing space to navigate--but only when I let myself share my burdens and allow my community to see my grief did I finally find hope again.

My own therapy journey changed my experience of the world and the people around me. In many ways, I think this is how the world heals and changes. Today, I strive to help connect others with the person who can traverse their own complicated story with them, and in doing so, change the world one person at a time.
